3D Printer

Here all the thoughts I have on the subject, the knowledge I accumulate about components and construction. Navigate by the right hand menu.

I have the choice whether to buy a complete kit, which would be sort of like buying furniture at IKEA, or, to do my own as far as feasible. The latter is limited by my non-existing workshop facilities.

Buy Finished or Kit Build from bought parts Build from scrap
Finished: Very Expensive, impossible in budget
Kit (BitsFromBytes) Quite Expensive
Expensive but within reach Affordable
Like buying a new kitchen appliance, guaranteed success Some effort to get parts, possible wrong purchases Uncertain when and where opportunity is to find right parts
Finished: (no effort)
Kit: Fun enough, for the day it takes
Som effort to gather parts. Making/adapting mechanical items a challenge More ingenious work and mechanics required. Have to buy some electronics, need circuit skills to adapt other stuff
No design involved – follow instructions. Design is inspired and partially copied from existing designs, not too hard Design harder, limited by available components
When done kit – start printing. Excitement with sub components getting operational. Excitement with each scavenged component. excitement with each bit fitting or working
Concentrate on the printing Satisfaction when done, tweaking when printing Extactic when operational. Great blog.
Failure not possible Failure possible Project abandoned quite possible. Project never working possible.
    An example

I am currently going with the “middle” way, ie buying new parts (some assembled).
